 Grigorenko Interview
« Thread Started on Feb 2, 2007, 2:42am »

I decided to post this into a new thread, thinking that some folks may miss it otherwise. You have to read between the lines to get something out of it, but I translated the whole thing anyway.

Igor Agishev for the “Home Advisor” newspaper.

Q: Igor, what type of emotions did you experience in the summer of 2003, while standing on a stage on crutches during the bronze medal award ceremony? Was there a sense of resentment with your own fate?

[Note: HK Lada placed third during the 2003 season, hence the award ceremony.]

IG: There was no resentment or sorrow. This is life and nobody is protected from accidents. I realized all of it very well, did not give in, and feel that I was able to commendably return from this very difficult situation. As soon as I regained consciousness for the first time after the accident, I said right away that everything was going to be fine and I would be back on the ice. And if I said so, then I will fight to the end and no one will be able to stop me. Besides, I was greatly aided by the support of my family and friends. When I was transferred from the resuscitative unit to the trauma unit, I had so much attention and care that I started to recuperate very quickly. And my then future wife, Oksana, did not leave my side even for a second.

Q: Is it true that due to multiple operations your left leg became several centimeters shorter, which affected your skating technique?

IG: Nonsense. Right now my conditioning and physical measurements are the same as they were before the accident. At first I took it easy on my bad leg, but now I don’t think at all about that injury.

Q: When you got back to the big club you were suddenly transferred to Salavat Yulaeyv. How did you take this transfer?

IG: Calmly. The situation was extremely simple. The team had to meet very serious expectations. During that season NHL had a lockout and very strong players came to Lada. I was still physically weak. In Ufa I got a lot more ice time, which helped me return back to form quicker.

Q: Last season you spent with Severstal and return to your parent club in the summer. The club from Cherepovets did not want to let go of its top scorer.

IG: My contract with Severstal did not expire, but it had a clause that allowed me to leave in the event of a head coaching change. I had to take advantage of this lone opportunity because in Togliatti was my daughter Alexandra (she is now 1yr. 8 mo. old) and I really wanted to be with my family.

Q: How does hockey player Grigorenko tackle being a father?

IG: I really like being in that role. I gladly spend all my free time with my family and my daughter.

Q: Hockey wives are from a category of women that are ready to take over the burden of homemaking. Oksana – no exception?

I think that I got lucky. Oksana grew up as a self-reliant and skillful homemaker. If you take the current young generation, few of the girls know how to cook, let alone cook as well as my wife. I noticed that right away after we met seven years ago. Of course, in my free time I am always glad to share the household responsibilities with her – play with our daughter, clean up, do the baby’s laundry, shopping.

Q: Who does your daughter look like?

IG: She looks more like my wife. But if you start talking about her character, everyone notices that Sasha has my determination; if she wants something, she’ll indubitably get it! She traveled to Greece with us in the summer and went through the flight and acclimatization without any problems. Her favorite task is to watch dad play hockey on TV or at the arena. Sometimes we are forced to turn on the recordings for her.

Q: How do you rate your current performance?

IG: It’s not up there yet, but things are getting better (spits twice not to jinx himself) and in the future, I am sure, everything will be fine. Besides, goals are goals, but it’s a lot more important for the team to win.

Q: What are your current aspirations?

IG: My goal is to continue to get better and earn the trust of the national team coaches. Just like any player I dream about playing in the NHL. I was already asked to go play for the Detroit Red Wings, the club that drafted me five years ago, this past summer. But I decided not to rush for now. Perhaps next season, if everything will continue to go according to plan, I will be able to give it shot there. I already spent some time in Detroit during the period of rehabilitation after the accident – underwent medical examinations there, visited scrimmages, marveled at the club infrastructure. I was pleasantly surprised by the attention that I received from local fans and autograph collectors.

Q: Are you learning English?

IG: I think that to do that you need to be in the proper language environment; studying at home will not be effective. I don’t like to guess so far into the future. Life already showed me once that everything can be turned up side down at a moment’s notice.

The guy sounds intelligent. And determined. I like that. I didn't know he had been to Detroit. It sounds like he was treated well by the Wings and their fans. Nice touch, guys.

Wonderful work Cska.

Bobby, most of the Russians sound intelligent when they aren't stumbling around in a second (or often 3rd language). Fedorov was always droppping crazy metaphors into the middle of long-winded sentences when he spoke Russian. But in English, all we ever got was "I like Hockey. Detroit good town."

Also, didn't Grigorgenko come over for the playoff push in 2002?

thanks for the article,

What are you reading between the lines? Particularly these lines?

"My goal is to continue to get better and earn the trust of the national team coaches. Just like any player I dream about playing in the NHL. I was already asked to go play for the Detroit Red Wings, the club that drafted me five years ago, this past summer. But I decided not to rush for now. To me that doesn't sound like a guy who's coming over.

Funny, I read that he is coming over if something like another car accident doesn't prevent him from doing so.

To me it sounds like a guy whos playing his cards right. Hes slipping away from the Wings and is going to be a free agent if we don't sign him. All the cards are in his hands now. Although I think both Grigorenko and Morozov have a chance at wearing Red and White next season.

If grigs is ging to sign with an NHL team next year it will be the wings. He will come in under the entry level contract system and if he signs with the wings it will the system under the old CBA which pays him more if it is another team it will be the new system which will pay him less.
