Perhaps this was covered in the gameday thread but I figured I'd start a thread where everyone could give their impressions of him as he works himself into game shape.
Considering he missed 80% of the season and this is basically his training camp, I think he showed flashes last night of what he could ultimately bring to this team. I like that he initiates contact in the corners with the defensemen; it's been so long since the Wings have had a big forward who actually uses his size (Shanny stopped after '97 IMO).
He went to the net consistently and created some traffic and although he did block some pretty good scoring chances, I think once he gets used to whatever linemates he ends up with he'll be in better position out front. Obviously running the goaltender over was great, there were a couple of scrums too where he grabbed a Jackets player and it was obvious they were going to behave themselves. I didn't see the shootout but I understand his move was pretty sweet, so maybe the hands will return as well.
Now, for some of the warts. He floated, ALOT. I really hope it's a function of conditioning and not knowing his linemates, but I noticed he was hanging out towards center ice alot and that's not gonna fly on this team in the post season. He didn't create a lot on his own and again I think it's probably a timing and conditioning issue but I want to see that ability to drive the net with the puck that he had in Vancouver, or else his impact will be limited to Holmstrom-like net-garbage. He also made some bonehead passes and my biggest fear is that, like Hatcher, he won't be able to play in an up-tempo, puck possession system.
I think we'll know more in two weeks but my analysis with a whopping one game's worth of data is the size and intimidation alone will be a boost and if he knocks the rust off, he could be a major thorn in the opposition's side.

I added the caveat of understanding it was his first game back in a while. Still, I think there the worry of a player fitting into the Wings system, especially considering out poorly other players the Wings have acquired have done at times (Hatcher, Whitney, Krupp, Ulf Samuelsson, Wendel Clark, Lang at times).

I'm sorry, I don't do impressions, my field is psychiatry.

With the exception of Whitney and Lang, the others were not here long enough to see if they could've fit in to the Wings system. Hatcher was hurt early on and came back with only a handful of games to play. Judging by the way Whitney has played for the Canes, I think he too could've fit in if given more ice time. With all the HoF'ers we had at the time, Whitney never got anywhere close to the ice time he had in Columbus and never really had a chance to show what he could really do.

you say he floated a lot and thats not going to fit into the wings system.
I tend to disagree. Robert lang has be doing it since the first day he got here and gets nothing but praise from the coaching staff.

Like what was mentioned, it is a bit early to have a true analysis on Bert's comeback. However, I do sense much promise when he gets used to being out there again. I bet he'll find his groove right before playoff time. There's no question about the intensity he brings and its just a matter of time before he will get his scoring touch and timing back. Not to mention, its the kind of goals that he can score that will matter the most in the playoffs. Nothing fancy...just drive to the net and get it done. Thats something most of the wings dont know how to do in the playoffs (hence the offensive slump they been in the past couple playoffs). Bert will provide much grit, intimidation, scoring touch, and leadership needed to succeed in the playoffs. He won't disappoint.
Btw....very sweet move during the shootout...too bad it hit the post, but again thats something that will only get better with a couple more games under his belt. Keep up the hard work Bert!

overall, i was pretty satisfied. He got popped pretty good his first shift with his back hitting the boards, but it didn't seem to bother him at all. I definately liked watching him get into a few shoving matches, showing his nasty streek. My favorite play of his was him showing his soft hands, while plowing through the goalie. I cant wait to see him come playoff time. (Knock on wood).

I'm not worried about him fitting in with the puck posession, he's actually a very skilled playmaker. I think it's just a matter of getting timing in two ways- first to have his body respond to what his brain thinks it should do and two, to have a better idea of where all his team mates like to go so he doesn't have to take as long a look before finding them. Once those clear up, I'm thinking 3-5 games in, you'll see a better Bert.
