Kenny Rogers made his season debut vs the Braves tonight and started where he left off last season. He went 6 innings, allowed only 2 hits and the bullpen came in and did their job and the Tigers beat the Braves 5-0.

It's good to see Rogers back on the mound and dealing them like he hadn't missed a day. Hopefully Robertson can step in and do the same and our rotation can return to being one of the best in baseball. I love our chances if we can run Bondo-Rogers-Verlander-Robertson out there in any given series.

Not just that Winger but, you could even add Miller to that list. Right now, he's got himself a 4-0 lead in the 6th. As for Rogers, I heard last night that he's got himself 29 consecutive scorless innings going back to the playoffs last season.

Rogers looked like he hadn't missed a start, and Miller looked today like he could step right into this increasingly-impressive pitching-rotation, and pull a Verlander, put in a "rookie of the year"-type season. He's a very good pitcher. I love the way Leyland is keeping his pitch-counts down.
Hottest team in baseball, right now. Still worried about Zumaya, but we've got some other arms, who should be able to handle the middle-relief if Joel doesn't fully recover right away.
Not to mention, we have Todd Jones, who "throws strikes." Creates a lot of excitement, but he usually gets the save, doesn't he?

Can't help but get giddy at the prospect of Miller, Bonderman and Verlander in Tiger unis for a long time. The Braves suck right now but Miller shut them out today throwing just one pitch. It's hard to see anything but the real deal in Miller.

He needs to develop the off-speed stuff but I'm not sure he'll get that opportunity at the major league level, or at least feel like he has the opportunity. The kid has to develop that third pitch and I'm still not sold that Detroit is the best place for it.

I've been incessently leery of having him with the Tigers this season, but I can't deny that he's been effective. And I don't think it's a coincidence that the bullpen has looked better as the starting rotation has rounded into shape. Having all of these guys reliably work late into games is taking a huge load off the shoulders of the relievers.

One thing I've loathed about the previous regime is their willingness to rush kids up to the show when they weren't ready......and this regime ain't immune. Had Bonderman spent more time in the minors he might have/should have developed an off-speed pitch that would take him to next step of being an elite pitcher rather than just a good one. Unfortunately I don't get to watch the Tigers much this year (thanks, Dish, you &^%$#*&) so I don't know if Bondy is throwing more breaking pitches. In any case Miller seems enthusiastic about developing his off speed stuff.....let's hope he does.

I remember many pitchers learning the split finger while they continued pitch in the rotation.

It doesn't seem very smart for a kid just out of college, learning to compete at the highest level, experimenting with a new pitch against major league hitters. Of course he could do that......throw lotsa balls, get behind against hitters, and putting himself in a weak position. That's what the minors and spring training is for.
