New York paper has article claims us and Minnesota might be looking at Yashin. www.silive.com/sports/advance/index.ssf?/base/Sports/1183032924237700.xml&coll=1Since Yashin just got bought out. He might come cheap. But he did not have a good season this year, and was injured. I would look at him or Kozlov, whoever comes cheapest. There both a gamble. We know Kozlov is very streaky in his scoring. I'd offer Yashin maybe $2 million a season, since he's already getting that in buyout money from the Islanders.

I'd focus on a winger instead of a center.

I'd focus on a winger instead of a center. I'd focus on any other player available instead of Yashin. I don't care how likeable he is.

If the wings resign Bertuzzi, I rather see them sign Zubrus or Kozlov also.
If the wings don't resign Bertuzzi, make a fair pitch at Drury or Smyth (but dont overpay either one) or go for a cheaper route like Guerin, Comrie, or Blake and use the rest of the cap space to shore up the defense (whether or not Schneids resigns or not).

We know Kozlov is very streaky in his scoring. Depending on the price, I wouldn't call Kozlov a gamble. Not in the same breath as Yashin, anyway. The guy is a consistent 20+ goal scorer and has 37 goals in 42 playoff games. Doesn't sound like a risk to me.

Like some of the articles have been saying. You have to look at the long term picture. TSN.CA is saying the Islanders are offering Smyth a 7-8 year deal for $6+ a year. We can't do that. Remember Zetterberg is UFA in 2 more seasons. We can't sign anyone to big money for more than 2 years.
So the Wings will be looking for the bargains. Whoever is willing to sign for 2 years or less at $4 million or less per season. I don't see Smyth taking $4 million to play here and turning down $6+. Plus Holland said we only have $10 million left. Won't leave much left if we sign Smyth for $6.
My understanding is the papers have been saying Holland has $10-$11 million to sign 1 goalie, 2 defenceman and a forward. Well the rumors are Hasek will get $2+ milllion, That means about $4 million for a forward, and whatever is left for defence which won't go far if we sign Schneider for the $5+ he's rumored to want.
What the Wings will likely do. Sign Hasek ($2-$2.5 year), sign one of Bertuzzi/Kozlov/Blake/Yashin for $3-$4 million, sign Schneider for $5. Then whatever holes are left will be filled with rookies. Likely meaning Quincey/Meech could be our 7th defenceman.

I wouldn't be opposed to Yashin. Does money matter to the guy and will he ditch us the year after if it gets him an extra buck? Yeah, but he's demonstrated the ability to put up points on a fairly consistant basis and this would be the best team he's been on since his Ottawa days. Plus, he's played wing before so maybe we could line him up next to Dats and see if they can form some kind of Russian connection.
He's obviously not a first choice, but he could still be a decent signing.

I think we just rid ourselves of a lazy, keep-the-nose-clean goal scorer. Why sign another? No matter the price, I really hope Holland looks to Alexei as a last resort.
I'd rather Fedotenko over Yashin.
